Speech Sound Production
Phonology
Choose the Phonology Path if your child is hard to understand. If people outside your family often struggle to understand your child, the issue may not be one or two tricky sounds. It may be a pattern. Many young children simplify speech in predictable ways, like “tat” for “cat,” “ba” for “ball,” or “poon” for “spoon.” Your child may even be able to say a sound correctly in one word but drop or swap it in another. That tells us the challenge is less about moving the mouth and more about how the brain is organizing the sound system.
Phonology work targets those patterns. Instead of drilling one sound at a time, we help your child learn the rule behind it, and when one pattern clicks, several sounds often improve together. For a child who is hard to understand, that can mean clearer speech, less frustration, and real progress sooner.
This path may be a good fit if:
- Strangers understand less than half of what your child says
- Errors affect many sounds, not just one or two
- Your child leaves off the ends of words or shortens word clusters (“top” for “stop”)
- Your child can say a sound sometimes but not consistently
